WASHINGTON (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Punahou student got the chance of a lifetime Wednesday morning. Seventh-grader Matthew Shimura joined first lady Michelle Obama at a reception at the White House.

He won a student documentary contest sponsored by C-SPAN with an entry focused on childhood obesity. He told the first lady he was inspired by the state's furlough Fridays.

"The public schools don't have school on Friday so they don't have lunch and they don't have PE on those days so they're lacking nutrition and physical exercise so I thought that could lead to childhood obesity."

During the reception Shimura also got to ask the first lady a question. "How do you think the government can improve nutrition and physical activity at schools?"

"The solution to this challenge has to come from the bottom up," she said. "So it's really going to require all of us working together."

Along with a trip to Washington, D.C., Shimura won a $3,000 prize. Congratulations to him!
