7.8 quake strikes Indonesia, no tsunami advisory in Hawaii

SUMATRA, INDONESIA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck just about 125 miles north of Sibolga, Sumatra in Indonesia.

No tsunami advisories were listed for Hawaii. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled their watch in the Indian Ocean about three hours after the event and said that no significant tsunami was generated by the quake.

Japan's Kyodo news agency reported blackouts in Medan and Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province. This region was one of the hardest-hit areas in the December 2004 earthquake and tsunami which killed over 227,000 people. So far there is no word of injuries or damage from the area.

The temblor was at a depth of 7.2 miles. It struck at 5:15 AM Wednesday morning in Sumatra, just after noon Hawaii time.
