Students and alumni pushing to keep Lahainaluna High School alive

LAHAINA (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Maui, about 100 students and alumni of Lahainaluna High School are pushing to help keep their boarding program alive.

Saturday's rally comes on the heels of a decision by the Senate Ways and Means Committee to halt funding for the project.

But some Maui legislators are trying to drum up support for the boarding program.

It's described as a work-study program which provides students across the state who attend Lahainaluna a chance to live and study in campus dorms. In return, the students carry out various jobs, normally done by paid staff.

Proponents say it has given students the opportunity to turn their lives around.

"The majority of the students that I know of they told me that it was a good program for them because a lot of these kids come from broken homes and they don't really have a second chance," Lahainaluna High School Tech Coordinator Jon Shigaki said.

Supporters say they'll continue to lobby legislators to restore full funding to the boarding program.
