HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hula and chanting practice is just part of the preparation needed for the Merrie Monarch hula festival. Let's not forget fundraising, a skill this hâlau has perfected over the years. Amy Kalili has more.

He mau lâ wale nô koe a haʻalele aku ko Hâlau Môhala ʻIlima huakaʻi hele ʻana aku i Hilo a i ka ʻâwai Mele Manaka nô hoʻi.

Hâlau Môhala ʻIlima is just days away from their annual trip to the Merrie Monarch stage.

Nui ke kâlâ e hoʻolilo ʻia no ka huakaʻi ʻana, no ka hoʻomâkaukau ʻana i ka lole a me ka lei, a me ka lele ʻana, me ka noho ʻana ma ka hôkele, he nui paha nô ʻeâ.

The expenses, from costumes and leis to air and lodging, really add up.

Ua hiki ke lilo ma kahi o ka $4,000 no kçlâ me kçia ʻôlapa no kekahi mau hâlau. No laila, pono e hakuhia nô ma ka ʻimi kâla ʻana.

It can cost upwards of $4,000 per dancer. So creative fundraising is a must!

Kûʻai aku ʻia nâ ʻano mea like ʻole ka puaʻa kâlau, ke kili mai Zippyʻs mai, ka pâlule tî kekahi.

We sell kâlua pig, Zippy's chili and even t-shirts!

Akâ, ʻo ka hanana ʻimi kâlâ nui no kçia hâlau, ʻo ia ka hôʻike kûmakahiki ʻo Holomua ka Noʻeau.

The hallmark fundraiser for this hâlau is its annual Holomua Ka Noʻeau concert.

I ko mâkou manaʻo inâ ʻo ka hula ka hopena, ka mea e lilo ai kçlâ kâlâ, he kûpono paha ia inâ hana ʻia ka hula no ka hoʻoulu ʻana i ke kâlâ.

If the funds are going to be used for hula, the means for raising them should be too!

Ua mâlama ko Hâlau Môhala ʻIlima i kçia hôʻike no ke 30 o nâ makahiki he 32 o ko lâkou komo ʻana i ka Mele Manaka.

Hâlau Môhala ʻIlima has held this hôʻike 30 of the 32 years they have participated in Merrie Monarch.

He mea koʻikoʻi ia no mâkou i hiki ke ʻike ʻia ke ʻano o ko mâkou hula ʻana a nâ loina o nâ kûpuna.

It important for us to share our traditional hula knowledge.

He nui ʻino ka hana, ka hoʻomâkaukau ʻana. A he kuleana nô ia, a he leʻaleʻa wale nô kekahi.

It is a lot of work to prepare for, but it's our kuleana and we have fun.

Mai ka hoʻomaʻamaʻa i nâ hula no ka hôʻike a i ka hoʻonaninani ʻâwai ʻana, he hoʻomâkaukau maikaʻi kçia no ka Mele Manaka.

From rehearsing numbers for the show to decorating the stage, this is great practice for Merrie Monarch!

Hana nô mâkou i nâ lei a mâkou e kau ai, me ka pâʻû kekahi, a hoʻomâkaukau i ka lole.

Nui nô ka hana akâ he mea e pili ai mâkou.

We make our own lei, pâʻû, and costumes. It's work but work that brings us together.

ʻO wau no kçia ʻo Amy Kalili no Sunrise ma Hawaii News Now. Aloha.
