Lawmakers set date for a plan to end school furloughs

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - April 12th. That's the deadline lawmakers have set for the governor, teachers union and Board of Education to come up with a consensus to end school furloughs.

The House finance committee voted late last night to provide money from the state's hurricane relief fund to pay for those days.

But in order to get the money, all three parties involved in furlough negotiations need to agree on one plan.

Committee chairman Marcus Oshiro will not specify how much money would be given from the fund.

He says while restoring instructional days is a priority, it's not the job of the legislature to get involved in the bargaining process.
