HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The FBI said a US government worker in American Samoa was hacked on the head by a man wielding a machete.

According to court documents, Mark Cunningham, an official with the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration, was attacked Monday on the island of Tutuila.

The FBI said Simeti Lualemana, 67, was arrested Monday.

He's charged with striking Cunningham with a machete.

Court documents said the attack happened while Cunningham was taking photographs of a home Lualemana was building illegally on land controlled by NOAA.

Cunningham suffered a deep cut to the left side of his face and partial amputation of his left ear.

Lualemana will face charges Friday in federal court in Honolulu.

If he's convicted he could face up to 20 years in prison.
