McDonald's mascot now under fire

HONOLULU - (HawaiiNewsNow) - The face of McDonald's is now under fire. In a report released Wednesday, Corporate Accountability International is calling on the restaurant chain to stop using its mascot, Ronald McDonald.

The same consumer watchdog group that sent Joe Camel packing for marketing cigarettes to kids is now trying to get rid of the iconic clown character. They say the McDonald's mascot is pushing kids to feast on fatty foods that feed into childhood obesity. The group says Ronald McDonald markets unhealthy fast food to kids.

The group held demonstrations outside McDonald's on the east and west coast Wednesday.  In Los Angeles a clown carrying sandwich board that read "Clowns for retiring Ronald" protested outside a McDonald's restaurant on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

McDonald's says Ronald's role is to make family meals fun and promote an active lifestyle. In a written statement McDonald's called Ronald "the heart and soul of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which helps four million children in need every year" and a beloved brand  ambassador.
