Sperm whale carcass lingering on Hawaii island beach

NIULII, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Rocky terrain is keeping marine experts away from a whale carcass on the north shore of Hawaii island. A dead sperm whale has been washed up at Pulolu Beach for about a month.

Charles Le'Heureux took this snapshot on March 4th.

Wildlife officials say they've been trying to retrieve the remains especially the tail, skull and vertebrae which could show scientists what killed the 40-foot whale. But because of the rocks they can't use heavy equipment.

Meantime, sharks have made off with much of the carcass.
