KAUNAKAKAI, Molokai (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 24-year-old Kualapuu man is dead after a violent crash late Monday night near Kaunakakai. Maui County police say Scott Furtado died after his pickup truck overturned and crashed into a maintenance building at Molokai Shores Condominium, pinning him.
Authorities say Furtado was traveling westbound on Kamehameha V Highway just after 11:00 PM when he went off the roadway, collided with a sign and then crossed back over the highway. The truck then crashed into another sign, a fire hydrant and a fence before it flipped over and collided with the building.
Furtado was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Police suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash.
