HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The school furlough Friday situation doesn't look like it's going to be resolved anytime soon. Now, one community organization is stepping up to help fill the void of lost classroom time.

The Hawaii Sci- Tech Institute has come up with an educational and informative way of teaching kids about science and technology. The full-day event is scheduled for April 30th. Students in grades six to eight will participate in hands-on activities, like designing computer gaming systems and extracting DNA from fruits and vegetables.

"Because this year they're sort of at the point where they're not having a full educational year, we thought the science and technology initiative would step up and give back a day of science education" said Dr. Keiki-Pua Dancil, president of the Hawaii Sci-Tech Council.

The April 30th event will be held at three locations: Honolulu Community College, Leeward Community College, and Windward Community College from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The program is free and lunch is included.
