Double suicide bombings kill 38 on Moscow subway

MOSCOW (NBC) - Investigators now believe the bombings were coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by two female suicide bombers. They are known in Russia as "black widows".

35 people were killed, more than 100 wounded. This is the deadliest attack on the Russian capital in more than six years.

This first attack happened just before 8:00 AM at the subway station that is just over the main headquarters of the security agency in Moscow, the former headquarters of the KGB.

Forty minutes later, the second blast happened at the Park Kultury Station. Witnesses spoke of panic at the underground station, with people falling over each other in the smoke and dust as they tried to escape.

Amateur video taken on a cell phone shows a smoke filled station and wounded people lying on the ground.

Officials say at least 14 people were killed in the attack on the Park Kultury Station.

Late word is investigators are blaming groups from the Caucasus region, where the Kremlin has been fighting a growing Islamist insurgency.
