Michelle Wie was penalized two strokes for grounding her club in a hazard after hitting out of the water on the 11th hole in the final round of the Kia Classic at La Costa on Sunday.
With her right foot in the water, Wie hit her submerged ball in a spray of water, with the ball moving only a few inches onto the rough. She then let her club touch the ground.
At the time the Punahou grad was in second place and trailed leader Hee Kyung Seo by 5-strokes. The Mistake proved to be costly for Michelle in more ways than one. Wie's final score of 4-under through 96-holes left her tied for 6th place, good for a $47,199 paycheck. Had she finished in a tie for second, Michelle would have pocketed $136,466 – that's a 90-thousand dollar mistake.
