HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It's no secret, here in Hawaii, we pay some of the highest prices for food, especially since around 80 percent of it has to be imported from the Mainland.

But a Kona woman may have the answer to keeping your wallets fat, while making you skinny.

Imagine feeding your family of four on just 25 bucks a week. That's the concept created by Gabrielle Sunheart.

She even wrote a book about it with its namesake. It's a personal issue for her. Just two years ago, she went from a comfortable income to nothing, overnight after some personal problems.

It left her nearly penniless.

"I was determined to create healthy, nutritious, easy to prepare meals that wouldn't break the budget," Sunheart said.

She started researching at the library. It led her to writing up and creating different recipes.

She focused on buying bulk items and farmer's markets produce. On this day, she's making a baked potato salad. She says her recipes are not only cheap, but healthy as well.

"I no longer have the kind of money that I had when I was going out to eat every meal, so I've really had to be conservative and cut back on going out to eat, but it really is surprising that I lost so much weight," she said.

It's estimated that on average, each person spends around $4,000 at the grocery store a year and an additional $3,000 eating out.

Sunheart feels her book may help bring down this cost and motivate you to live a healthy lifestyle.

"I just hope that it helps people survive this and that they eat healthy, maybe even become healthier and that ultimately that they can feed their families," she said.
