HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - As Hawaiian culture-based education schools and enrollments increase, the approaches and methods for this type of education are growing and progressing as well. Amy Kalili talked with those involved in the revision of a resource tool that helps to articulate recommendations and strategies for improving education through a Hawaiian point of view.
Pehea kâkou e hoʻoholomua ai i ka hoʻonaʻauao ʻia o nâ keiki ma ke kula ma o ke kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi a me ke kahua o nâ kûpuna o kâkou?
Polopeka, Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikôlani
How do we educate our keiki from a Hawaiian perspective and values set?
Ma ke kâlailai ʻana i kçia nînau a manaʻo, ua hoʻomohala ʻo Keiki me nâ hoakumu a mea noiʻi i kçia puke kâkoʻo no nâ kiʻina aʻo e kumu ana i ke kuanaʻike Hawaiʻi.
As a process of answering this question, Keiki, along with other educators and reseachers, developed this culture-based education resource.
Nui nâ ʻano o ke aʻo ʻana, maikaʻi. Akâ pehea ke ʻano o ko Hawaiʻi, he nînau kçlâ, a eia ka pane – Nâ Hônua Mauli Ola.

There are many proven teaching methods but this is a Hawaiian approach.

The guidebook reccomends strategies like giving relevant context to content.
I think that really transforms the learner to be more engaged when things make sense to them. When youʻre drawing in what they already know from their home culture and their community.

He mea e hoihoi a ʻoiaʻiʻo ai ke aʻo ʻana ke pili maoli i ko lâkou kaiâulu.

Nâ Honua Mauli Ola builds upon the traditional concepts documented in the 1998 essay, Kumu Honua Mauli Ola.
ʻO ia nô ke kahua, ka manaʻo nui, ke kiʻi nui. A ma Nâ Hônua Mauli Ola.
Alakaʻi Papahana Kula Kamaliʻi, ʻAha Pûnana Leo, Inc.
That was the overall vision and Nâ Honua Mauli Ola provides strategies.
ʻAʻole pili wale nô i ke kula akâ, i ke ʻano o ka nohona kekahi.
Its application is not confined to the classroom, but also applies to daily life.
He hôʻike kçia he aha lâ nâ mea ma ka hoʻonaʻauao aku i ke kanaka

It's a tool to help instill a good foundation for our keiki.

The revision was discussed at last week's Native Hawaiian Education Conference with the full release set for this summer.
