Dead whale carcass lands in Honolulu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The carcass of a rare whale arrived by plane Tuesday evening in Honolulu.

The beaked whale washed ashore on Maui Monday afternoon.  Experts were planning to transport it to the animal hospital at the University of Hawaii-Hilo, but it died suddenly.

The 12-foot beaked whale is rarely seen, because it is a deep sea creature.  So the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration plans to perform a necropsy, to see what killed it.  But scientists also want to take the opportunity to learn more about the sea creature.

Hawaii News Now's Mari-Ela David was live at the airport when the cargo arrived. She has more on what will happen next, on Hawaii News Now at 9 & 10.
