Monk seal settles into California laboratory

SANTA CRUZ, CA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A monk seal abandoned off of Kauai, is now at a new home in California.

KP2, as he was known in the islands, is now at the University of California's Santa Cruz Long Marine Laboratory. He goes by the name Hoailona, meaning message of the sea.

Hoailona was shipped off after he became too agressive, and got too close to people in Molokai. Scientists also discovered the popular monk seal had cataracts, and was quickly going blind.

He is set to undergo surgery sometime in the future in California.

Meanwhile, he is a popular addition to UC Santa Cruz.  Researchers there have set up several websites and even a Facebook account, that follows Hoailona from Hawaii to California, and through his new life there on the West Coast.

Hoailona will likely move back to the aquarium on Oahu, once studies and surgery are finished early next year.
