HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

It's strike two for Honolulu City Council member Rod Tam.

Today, the council censured him, this time for misusing city funds.  The vote was unanimous.  Even Rod Tam voted to censure himself.

But not until after the council made an amendment.

The original censure resolution that council member Charles Djou introduced called for Tam to resign.  But the council took that out.  So what passed today is basically a formal statement saying the council frowns on Tam's expense mess.

The mayoral candidate is on the hot seat for using nearly 14-thousand dollars of his council allowance to pay for meals that were not related to council business.  Tam has admitted to making errors on receipts.  "The other option which I have stated before is to pay for this constituency work out of my own pocket," said council member Rod Tam, "and to offset it in terms of a legal way of business tax exemption."

"I don't think he should remain a member of the Honolulu City Council because he has violated the public's trust and he's abused public resources," said Councilmember Charles Djou.

In June of 2008, the council censured Tam for his use of a racial slur - a move Tam also voted in favor of.  The derogatory term he used during a zoning committee meeting sparked protests among the Hispanic community.

Some said the censure wasn't enough and that Tam should be removed from office.
