Howzit Howard: Hawaii legislature

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii legislature is still considering a temporary increase in the general excise tax.

The House killed a bill to do that but still has a bill on the boards that's left over from last year.

On Senate side, two committees have cleared the idea - commerce and economic development - but it still has to clear Senate Ways & Means.

Donna Kim chairs that committee and she says there doesn't seem to be much point in passing it if Governor Lingle will veto it, unless there are enough votes to override the veto.

I get the impression there aren't, at least not now.

That could change if lawmakers can't find enough other revenue sources.

The general excise tax is by far the single most important source of the state tax revenue.
