BELLINGHAM, Washington (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The Brigham Young University Hawaii men's basketball team's season came to an end at the NCAA II West Regional Championship game for the third year in a row as Cal Poly Pomona defeated the Seasiders 78-75 in the title game.
BYU–Hawaii had three chances to tie the game in the closing seconds after the Broncos' Mark Rutledge made one of two free throws with 26 seconds left. However, Jet Chang missed a pair of three-pointers and A.J. Reilly misfired on a third and the Broncos broke the Seasiders hearts again. Last year Cal Poly Pomona scored a one-point victory on BYU–Hawaii's home court on a putback with three seconds to play in the regional final.
Lucas Alves scored 22 of his game-high 26 points in the second half and pulled down ten rebounds in the game to end his BYU–Hawaii career with a double-double.
The Seasiders end their season with a 22-6 record.
