WAIANAE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police are out at a beach park in Nanakuli right now, clearing out the homeless.

The city issued a 10:00 PM deadline to pack up and move out. It's part of a project designed to clean up the shoreline, of trash, and crime.

Yet another step in the battle against illegal homeless camps along Waianae's coast.

Here at Ulehawa Beach Park, it's moving day. The homeless, forced to clear out their tents and belongings, once again. Residents say, it's a safety move.

"This area here is Ulehawa comfort station park and at night it's a little different," said Waianae Neighborhood Board chairwoman Patty Teruya. "You have illegal activity. You have a liquor store across the street. So there's a lot of numerous drinking and illegal activity here. So as the residents, we know that we just don't come here anymore at night."

Teruya says the community has been working hard to take back the shoreline. During the last two weeks of March, the city will close Ulehawa Beach Park for repairs and maintenance.

"Oh, I'm happy for that," said Waianae resident Julian Gonzaga. "I'm really happy because all the homeless over there were taking over our beach. All my kids, they cannot swim anymore because of them ... because they stay in the way all the time. They act like they own the beach already."

The clean-up is phase two of a project that started last Fall. Once finished, Ulehawa Beach Park will be added to the list of other public parks that close overnight.

Residents say they hope to relocate the homeless to shelters and promote the Waianae coast as a beautiful, and safe place to visit.

Ulehawa Beach Park will be closed through Thursday.

After that, the late-night closure will take effect from 10:00 PM to 5:00 AM every night.
