KAWAIHAE, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fast-moving brushfire near the Hapuna resort has triggered evacuations at the Kawaihae village and transitional housing area. Late Friday afternoon high winds pushed the flames over Kawaihae Road.
"The fire reached an area that was fringing on the Maunakea resort area we saw flames reaching half mile long.. Billows of smoke, it's calmed down right now a bit. There are still some hot spots you can see helicopters dumping loads of water on hot spots..just waiting on the winds to pick up again because it has just calmed down before sunset" said Gunner Mench, owner of the Harbor Gallery.
About 80 acres have burned so far. Three helicopters, four bulldozers and four tankers are working to stop the fire from spreading. Akonipule highway has reopened. Kawaiahae road is still closed.
