HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Strong winds knocked out power in the Kalihi and Sand Island areas for about an hour Tuesday afternoon, leading to major traffic snarls and causing some businesses to temporarily close. The outage happened around 2:45 PM Tuesday and affected around 2,500 Hawaiian Electric customers.

Traffic cameras and stoplights were out all over the Kalihi area including Likelike Highway, causing major tie-ups. Hawaiian Electric restored power to all effected customers around 3:45 PM.

The cause of the outage is suspected to be a swing short, which is when electricity jumps from one line to another as two lines swing close together. The short is thought to have occurred in the Sand Island area.
