HPD suspending DUI photo web site

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Department announced that it is suspending its popular web site that shows the names and photos of people arrested for impaired driving. HPD issued a brief statement on Tuesday saying that the department is reviewing the pilot project and that during the review period they will not be posting photos.

The web page featured photos of all impaired driving arrestees during the previous week each Wednesday for a 24-hour period. The site has had both critics who questioned the appropriateness of posting photos of suspects not yet convicted and supporters who believed the stigma of public exposure would deter drivers who were impaired from getting behind the wheel. The department says that there were no legal issues with the postings and that the mugshots are public information.

HPD says that the web site averaged 5,000 to 9,000 hits per week.

The site began posting photos in late November of last year and original plans called for the pilot program to last six months. HPD has not indicated how long the review period will last.
