Falling lumber crashes into Kauai home

HAENA, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - A scary moment for a Kauai couple Friday, a 4x4 crashed right into their roof. The large piece of lumber fell from a helicopter that was hauling material to a nearby botanical garden.

The home is at the bottom of the valley in Haena, on Kauai's north shore. The helicopter was hauling building supplies to the Limahuli Garden for renovations.

Mike and Nancy Soppeland were at home when the chopper flew right over their house. That's when the 4x4 plummeted toward the roof of their lanai. Luckily no one was hurt but take a  look at the damage.

The wood ripped through the fiberglass roof then smashed into the lanai. The Soppelands have lived there for 23 years. Mike was on his computer when his house suddenly started shaking.

"The closet thing that I can compare it to is a tree falling into your house an intense crashing noise. Between the carpentry and the material its probably less than a couple thousand dollars, it's not that big of a deal, now if it had fallen onto the house that would have been another story" said Soppeland.

Despite the close call the homeowner says accidents happen. He's not considering legal action.

He says the botanical garden has already sent a crew of laborers and carpenters to help fix the lanai. All that is missing now is the fiberglass part of the roof.
