HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -$920,000.

That's how much the State Elections Officer told lawmakers today, it will cost to run the mail-in only election to replace Neil Abercrombie in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most of the funds can be rerouted from other areas in the Department of Accounting and General Services. However, the office of elections is short $140,000.

Some lawmakers in today's briefing say the entire process is too much money during a tight fiscal year. They want the seat to remain vacant until the primary election in September. A bill moving through the legislature right now, would actually move that election up to early August.

The mail-in only election was already an attempt to save money. A traditional polling place election would cost $1.2 Million.

Hawaii News Now's Holly Juscen is getting more details from representatives as well as elections officer Scott Nago, and is working on bringing back the story tonight on Hawaii News Now at 6:00.
