Navatek tour ship returns to port after problem

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Navatek I, a tour catamaran operating out of Honolulu Harbor, returned to port Thursday afternoon after a mechanical problem. The ship began leaning to one side as it headed out on an afternoon cruise.

The ship had a mechanical issue due to a ballast problem, and a decision was made to turn the ship back to port. No injuries have been reported in the incident.

"…the vessel was immediately returned to its slip at Honolulu Harbor, passengers were safely disembarked, and the whale watch cruise canceled. The problem has already been fixed and Navatek I has been approved by the US Coast Guard to resume service starting with tonight's Sunset Dinner Cruise" said Ronald Williams, president of Atlantis Submarines, owner of the Navatek I.

The 140-foot ship conducts daytime whale-watching excursions off Oahu as well as sunset dinner cruises. Passengers on Thursday's excursion were given refunds or bookings on a future trip.
