HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Just ten months ago John Henderson was in intensive care barely alive, but now the 36-year-old is rehabilitating and redefining his life.

Henderson was paralyzed from the waist down after being hit by a tour bus on his bicycle on Kamehameha Highway last May.

"Now I am able to swim and workout with weights a little bit. Will I be the same person I was?, no, absolutely not," says Henderson.

Henderson was with his lawyer Wednesday after receiving a huge settlement from the tour bus company. He can't disclose how much money he was awarded but says all of his current and future medical expenses will be covered.

Henderson says he already has $700,000 in medical bills.

"I didn't need to be paid off to be happy, What makes me happy is riding and swimming and doing the things I do. I have to buy wheelchairs and medical equipment -- with this settlement I won't have to worry about that now," Henderson said.

Now with the legal claims behind him, the 36-year old says it's his responsibility to raise awareness and make the streets of Hawaii safer for cyclists. Henderson's rehabilitation hasn't been easy --but he is once again working full-time as a medical lab technician and as each day passes he is confident about one thing, " I will say that i will walk again.
