HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A six-man U.S. Marine Corps honor guard carried Frank Fasi's flag-draped casket into City Hall, the building where he worked as Honolulu's longest-serving mayor.

"We gather together here at Honolulu Hale to honor and to remember our beloved Frank Francis Fasi," Father Keahi said.

The Fasi family, his wife, Joyce, his eleven children, twenty grandchildren, and 200 invited guests gathered in the courtyard of Honolulu Hale.

Outside, dozens of mourners watched on television screens, lost in thoughts of...

the man known everyone called "Mr. Mayor."

"If you had a list it would be a whole page full of things he's done to help the people of Hawaii," Robert Kent said.

"We lost a man who cared," Walter Yamane said.

That's what was said inside, too. Fasi's son, Charles, did the eulogy.

"When a strike kept the grass in front of City Hall from being mowed he cut it. When office trash cans weren't emptied he did it. When graffiti became a problem he donned his coveralls, filled his Fasi can with paint and drove around town on weekends to beautify his city," he said.

He said his father wasn't a man who said the word "can't" but instead always asked "how?"

"Mayor Fasi had a propensity for action and he had it in spades. He wanted to get things done and get them done fast," former colleague Ed Hirata said.

Inside the building dozens of photographs of Fasi were on display from his days as a Marine, to his rise up the political ranks from territorial senator to city councilman to Honolulu mayor.

"He looked at every crisis, every challenge as an opportunity to be creative and to make things better," Mayor Mufi Hannmann said..

Fasi died at his home in Makiki on February 24.

"In his 89 years of life we see that the love he gave has been returned to him 100 fold." Charles Fasi said.

Frank Fasi was mayor for 22 years.

What he accomplished will last a lifetime.
