Investigators: Fire that left 18 homeless was intentionally set

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – 18 people are homeless Friday morning after a fire destroyed an apartment house in McCully Firefighters responded to a call just after 3:30 AM to a home on Hauoli Street. There were no reports of serious injury.

When firefighters arrived they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the four-unit building. They then called for a second alarm.

All of the residents of the unit were safely out of the building when fire crews arrived. The flames were fully extinguished by 5:19 AM. A total of 35 firefighters were involved in the effort.

Honolulu Fire Department investigators have determined that the fire was intentionally set. The case has been referred to the Honolulu Police Department.

The Red Cross is assisting the victims with temporary shelter, clothing and other emergency needs.
