Small fire causes big backup at Honolulu inter-island terminal

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Inter-island flights were running late Thursday after a small, but smoky fire at the Honolulu Airport's inter-island terminal.

A photo taken by a pilot showed smoke billowing from a vent in the roof.

The fire broke out about 1:30 in the Burger King kitchen. The smoke filled the holding area, forcing travelers to evacuate while state fire crews got it under control.

"It was almost an hour that the terminal was closed. And that's because there was so much smoke in the area that they needed to ventilate as well as do another TSA security sweep of the whole area" said Tammy Mori of the state Department of Transportation.

Three mainland-bound flights were delayed and inter-island flights were running about a half-hour behind schedule late Thursday afternoon.
