Toyota execs grilled by congressional lawmakers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (HawaiiNewsNow) - Toyota executives will be facing tough questions Tuesday on Capitol Hill. They're attending the first part of a two-day congressional hearing. Lawmakers want to know whether the auto giant did everything it could to protect the lives of American drivers.

A recently-released internal memo shows Toyota saved $100 million by persuading government regulators to end a 2007 investigation with a relatively cheap floor mat recall. But congressional investigators believe Toyota misled the public and intentionally dismissed the possibility that electronic flaws were causing its vehicle problems.

"I think there are going to be fireworks because it's now clear that Toyota intentionally tried to avoid doing these recalls on sudden acceleration, and they did it for dollars and cents," said consumer Joan Claybrook.

Toyota is now under criminal investigation for its safety problems. The company's president will testify before congress on Wednesday.
