Hawaiian News: Teaching your child Hawaiian Language

(HawaiiNewsNow) - Have you ever wanted your preschooler to learn the Hawaiian Language, but didn't know where to start? Amy Kalili gets you the information you need to know from a former parent and teacher at a Hawaiian language immersion preschool.  

The ‘Aha Pûnana Leo has been educating Hawaiʻi's families through our ʻôlelo Hawaiʻi for 27 years now.

"I have a role to play in supporting the language of our land," said Kalehua Caceres Kahu, Punana Leo o Waianae.

Kalehua, the Director of the Pûnana Leo preschool in Waiʻanae, started in the program as a parent.

"All three of my children were students in the program and I eventually became a teacher," said Kalehua.

Kalehua saw the value of the program and the impact it had on her family and she eventually became a leader in the program.

The whole family participates in the educational experience from language learning to supporting school operations.

"And all of the work is well worth the benefits!" said Kalehua.

"Having them be fluent in our language and being confident in who they are is so fulfilling," said Kalehua. "They really are keiki of Hawaiʻi."
