PEARL HARBOR (HawaiiNewsNow) - Construction on the final phase of the new USS Arizona Memorial visitor center has started. The project will include new indoor and outdoor museum galleries. Renovations are also being done on the theaters where visitors view a film about the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The first phase opened to the public on Wednesday. Highlights include a bigger bookstore and a central ticketing facility. The improvements are being welcomed by visitors and Pearl Harbor survivors.

"They know that this is an investment in their story. It's ensuring that their memories will not be forgotten," said Eileen Martinez, chief of interpretation for the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

"A lot of room for expansion, we've got a lot of open space, and people are already enjoying themselves in the new wide open spaces," said regional project director Thomas Fake.

The price tag for the entire project is $58 million. The second phase is scheduled to open on December 7, 2010, to coincide with the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.
