(HawaiiNewsNow) - There's another disappointing blow to the job front. The Labor Department says the number of newly laid-off workers filing for unemployment unexpectedly surged last week. That's after falling sharply in previous weeks. The new report shows first-time claims rose by 31,000, to 473,000. This crushes hopes that the labor market could be improving. The nation has lost 8.4 million jobs since the recession began in December 2007.
