U.S. offensive continues in Afghanistan

(HawaiiNewsNow) - A major offensive continues in southern Afghanistan. Right now, U.S. Marines and Afghan troops are under fire from Taliban insurgents. The massive offensive involves some 15,000 U.S., Afghan and British troops. This is the biggest joint operation since 2001 when U.S. led the invasion into Afghanistan. NATO forces are trying to set up a government authority, in one of the last Taliban strongholds in the country.

"Our plans calls for clearing the area, holding the area, and then providing some building for the people there, better security," said General James Jones, National Security Adviser.

One of the forces' main goals is to win the trust of the Afghan people. They're taking extra precaution to protect civilians, but 12 died Sunday when a rocket missed its target. NATO has since suspended the use of that rocket system.
