HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
A couple former Hawaii residents were in Vancouver for the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games Friday.
Moanalua High School graduate Ryan Shimabukuro is a speed skating coach with the U.S. Olympic Team.
Elena Hight, from Hanalei, will compete in the halfpipe snowboarding event.
When Hight was about six, she opted to pursue snowboarding instead of surfing.
Hight finished 6th in the halfpipe at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy when she was just 16 years old.
Since then she has won medals in several international competitions including the U.S. Grand Prix and the Winter X-Games.
"There is a little bit of added pressure compared to last time. I think that is fuel and energy to go out there and do my best," Hight told Hawaii News Now.
The women's halfpipe competition begins Thursday, February 18.
