HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - February arrivals by air show the cost of not hosting the Pro Bowl, and the importance of sports tourism to the island economy.

The Pro Bowl, held in Miami this year, was held in Hawaii last year on Sunday, Feb. 8. The state's daily count of arrivals by air has been down in double-digit percentages on days that corresponded to big Pro Bowl arrivals last year, including game day itself.

Monday arrivals, corresponding to the day after the game last year, were roughly even with year-ago levels.

Japanese arrivals, however, are up 7% so far this month and total international arrivals except from Canada are up 10%. Canadian arrivals are treated as domestic traffic until the monthly breakouts.

Also this week, the annual report on the economic impact of the Honolulu Marathon, done by Hawaii Pacific University Professor Jerry Agrusa, showed that the 2009 race drew the low-end of attendance over the past decade, yet spending was still higher.
