HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The boy's state high school soccer tournament kicks off Wednesday afternoon at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
A team from the ILH has won the Division One championship the past several years, but this year Mid-Pacific Institute, which won the ILH regular season championship, will not be competing in the Division One tournament. Instead it will play in the Division Two tournament.
"It's very bizzare. It's an unfortunate circumstance because Mid-Pacific is an excellent team. They're definitely a Div One team," said Punahou head coach David Trifonovitch.
While Mid-Pac competes in the ILH against other Division One teams ... including Iolani, Kamehameha, and Punahou ... it is classified as a Division Two team in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament.
"I would have really liked to see them in the Div One tournament this year because i think they would have had a very good shot of doing well in it," Trifonovitch added.
Punahou, which finished a close second to Mid-Pac in the ILH, is the top seed in Division one followed by 2nd seeded Mililani, 3rd seeded Baldwin, and 4th seeded Kealakehe.
"I want it pretty badly because it's always an honor to represent your school in a state tournament and it's even more of an honor to bring home a state championship," said Punahou Junior Scott Granger.
"We have this idea pride. We're not only playing only for ourselves. We're playing for people who already graduated from Punahou, so we're trying to win one for them too," said Punahou Senior Chris Patmont.
