Man dies in Hawaii island motorcycle crash

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 53-year-old Kealakekua man died Monday afternoon after he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a tree on Mamalahoa Highway. Investigators say the man was attempting to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone, when he ran off the road. The accident occurred around 4:30 PM.

The man was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:10 PM. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved but speed was a factor in this crash. The man was not wearing a helmet.

Investigators have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
