HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Weekly claims for unemployment benefits fell below 19,000 for the last week of January, the Hawaii Department of Labor & Industrial Relations reported late Sunday.
There were 18,717 total claims, the lowest count in a year, with declines at every employment office state, and of those fewer than 2,300 were first-time claims. Only a handful of weeks have seen so few new claims since last summer.
The figures do not necessarily presage a permanent decline in Hawaii unemployment but they are lower, and January claims overall are also lower, than some economists had expected.
