Hawaii energy consumption declines

Hawaii fuel consumption has fallen during the economic slump, according to monthly reports from the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism.

Based on data from 11 months of 2009 - December data will come later - gasoline consumption statewide has been running 0.5% below year-before levels.

Diesel consumption was down more sharply, about a fifth below the levels of 2008.

There are 2% fewer passenger vehicles registered in Hawaii than there were a year ago, based on the newest report, but that still means more than 900,000 vehicles.
