HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- By a vote of 24 to 1, the state Senate confirmed former US Attorney Ed Kubo's appointment to be a Circuit Court judge.

The vote followed two days of hearings before the Senate Judiciary and Government Affairs Committee. Last week members deadlocked 3-3 on his confirmation.

Committee Chairman Brian Taniguchi voted against Kubo in committee but hen changed his mind after meeting with Kubo in private.

"I'm confident now we need to give him a chance," Taniguchi told fellow senators.

But Sen. Lea Ihara, the lone "no" vote said Kubo failed to show a "respect of law" in a case he handled as a prosecutor.

"He demonstrated actions unbecoming for a judge," he said.

Still the Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm Kubo to the bench.

"I know there's a backlog of cases so I'm anxious to get to work," Kubo said.
