HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A popular Honolulu restaurant has closed its doors for good on Tuesday night. It's been open for nearly 30 years.

The Hungry Lion on Nuuanu Avenue started serving people in 1982. But the owners say the rough economy has taken a toll on its business.

They were hoping to hang on for a few more months, but the area is being turned into a Walgreens.

The Berndt family has been going there for 20 years and were shocked to hear it was closing for good.

"It's kind of sad, we're sad that it's leaving because they don't have many of these places anymore, so it's a little bit of Americana going away," Longtime customer Dave Berndt said.

The Hungry Lion hung up the closed sign for the last time at 11 p.m., Tuesday. Around 20 employees will be out of a job.
