Hawaii brewing company uses solar energy to brew beer

KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Big Island brewery will soon be harnessing the sun's power to brew beer. Kona Brewing Company is installing a solar energy generating system at its Kailua-Kona Brewery and Pub. Construction has begun on the system, and is expected to be fully operational by April.

Hawaii Sunetric will install the solar system.

"It's going to be Awesome, we will be taking up almost two complete roofs of solar panels producing 228 kilowatts of power that's almost 60 percent of the power that this brewery requires. As you can imagine being in the middle of the pacific ocean on the big island power can be extremely important so anything we can do to minimize that cost and use the natural environment is positive for everybody," KBC President Mattson Davis said.

At the entrance to the restaurant, guests will be able to check out a real-time monitor that shows how much energy the solar system is generating.
