Safeway planning new store on Beretania

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new bigger and better Safeway is in the works, one that would replace the existing supermarket on Beretania Street. Right now, an empty lot and vacant buildings stand where Schuman Carriage used to be.

Since the property has been put on the market for sale, Safeway has indicated an interest in purchasing it. Supermarket officials say they are meeting with community members about the plan.

If all goes as planned, the new store, similar in size and scale to the Safeway on Kapahulu Avenue, would be 60,000 square feet and have 230 parking stalls.

Construction on the proposed supermarket is set to begin this year. Officials with the company say the store is slated to open in  the summer of 2011.
