HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – 46-year-old Frank Rodrigues, a security guard working at the Duty Free Shoppers (DFS) store in Waikiki, died following a scuffle with a shoplifting suspect Thursday morning. Police say Rodrigues was trying to detain the 27-year-old suspect when he fell to the ground and struck his head before losing consciousness.

City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic says paramedics treated Rodrigues and transported him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A spokeswoman for DFS, Sharon Weiner, says the guard was well-known and well-respected at the company.

Police say that the suspect, a homeless man, had visited the store on Wednesday. Loss prevention officers confronted the man concerning a theft that had occurred Wednesday and that's when the scuffle broke out.

An autopsy will be conducted. Police arrested the suspect.
