HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A young driver who, prosecutors say, contributed to a deadly car crash in Mililani three years ago pleaded guilty to the felony charge of fleeing the scene Thursday.

Bernard DeCoito, Jr. was charged with the more serious offense of manslaughter, but struck a plea deal.

Prosecutors say he and a second driver, Justin Amorin, were excessively speeding on Lanikuhana Avenue, when Amorin lost control of his Volkswagon Jetta and slammed into a tree.

Amorin's back-seat passenger, Gillian Badua, 17, was killed. His front-seat passenger, Gavin Watson, spent 41 days in a coma and was partially paralyzed.

In December, a judge sentenced Amorin to 10 years in prison, or five years for each victim.

DeCoito also pleaded guilty to assault for Watson's injuries. Under his plea agreement, he received a sentence of 18 months in jail, five years probation, and a five-year driver's license suspension.

Prosecutors say Badua's grieving family members agreed to the plea deal, saying it brings them closure.
