HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Howard Dicus has the breakdown of Hawaii's 6,514382 visitors. First, that number was down four-and-a-half percent from 2008. And where did those visitors come from?
More than two-thirds of our visitors flew here from the west coast or such western cities as Vegas, Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix. US east visitors, which include those flying from Minneapolis, Chicago, Dallas and Houston, fell the most, more than seven percent. Japanese arrivals were down for the year even though they've been up for the past three months or so.
Canadian visitor traffic was down almost seven percent. The Hawaii tourism authority says it focused mostly on boosting numbers from Japan, and now there are efforts to boost traffic from the west coast, while Marriott's motorcoach tour is targeting the southeast.
