HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More details on the December unemployment data that came out Friday. With seasonal retail hiring, December unemployment was flat on Kauai and fell on every other island.
Oahu alone has unemployment below six percent, and it fell five tenths from November to December, to 5.3 percent. It's probably higher than that this month. The islands of Maui and Lanai were next lowest, both falling three tenths from nine percent to 8.7 percent. Kauai held steady at 8.9 percent.
The Big Island fell one tenth to 9.6 percent. Molokai still has the highest jobless rate, almost 12 percent, despite the rate falling the most, six tenths, in December. Molokai is the only island with a higher unemployment rate than the national average of ten percent, but the national average is seasonally adjusted and these other numbers aren't.
