Woman who fell off Hawaii cliff rescued

PUNA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A woman on the Big Island is recovering Saturday evening, after falling off a rock cliff on the Puna coast.

It happened late Saturday morning in Paradise Park.

At first, rescue crews used lines to try and lift her out from the bottom of the cliff. But they had a hard time, so they air lifted her instead.

Firefighters say the 19-year-old fell of the edge while fishing. A man who was whale watching nearby, heard screaming, and called 911.

"I really didn't pay much attention to it at first, so I went back to whale watching, but then I turn to see there was a young woman down at the bottom of the cliff which was a 20 foot drop off, then I knew something was wrong", said Clifford Smith who called 911.

Firefighters say it was actually a 30 foot drop.

The woman complained of pain in her leg, and may have fractured it.

Paramedics took her to the hospital in stable condition.
